Arms deal scandal: EFCC arrests Jafaru Isa, APC chieftain

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Wednesday night arrested Lawal Jafaru Isa, a chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress and the former military governor of Kaduna State.

Isa is the first chieftain of the APC arrested by the EFCC since the beginning of probe into the alleged diversion of $2.1 billion meant for arms purchase by officials of the immediate-past administration. He was arrested at his residence in Ajayi Crowther Street, Asokoro, Abuja.

Mr. Isa was a military administrator of Kaduns State from December 1993 to August 1996 during the military regime of General Sani Abacha, and one-time governorship candidate of defunct CPC in Kano State. He is also a close friend of the embattled former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, and a close associate of President Muhammadu Buhari.

According to Premium Times, Mr. Isa was invited last week to appear before the commission to clarify issues on alleged receipts of funds from the office of the former National Security Adviser. Report says Mr. Isa received N100 million from Dasuki. It was also gathered that he declined the invitation, but wrote the EFCC through his lawyer to seek postponement of his appearance, as a result of death of a relative

The EFCC was not satisfied by his excuse and thereafter arrested him at his residence in Abuja. One of the EFCC officials said Mr. Isa had been wasting their time and they just had to arrest him to clear the air on the "questionable receipts".
